We make every effort to give the fairest and most objective analysis of players when selecting teams. It is very important to us to protect the health of our athletes and to reduce their fatigue level, since we understand that many players will have other tryouts the same day. We will do everything we can to have players play only when necessary and when they are being looked at. We are not concerned if players are standing around, as long as they can be warm for the time they do spend on the court.
What are we looking for?
We look not only for experienced and skilled volleyball players, but also for general athleticism, speed, height, vertical reach, and good attitudes. City Beach players exhibit the highest levels of sportsmanship, so we also look to see who will uphold the values of our club. Some of these values include: building up teammates, recovering from errors, having a strong competitive drive, respecting and listening to coaches, and focused work ethic.
Number Reduction
Due to time constraints and the large number of tryout participants, there is a need to reduce the number of participants by about an hour into the tryout for some of the age groups. You may see the use of wristbands that will be handed out by coaches. These wristbands are a way for us to manage the large numbers and to help give everyone an adequate assessment. If you do not receive a wristband early, please remember that there should be at least 2 waves through before the initial round is completed. Players that are given wristbands will be removed from the courts so that the athletes without wristbands can be given a more thorough evaluation. Wristbands do not mean that a player has made a team.
Team Selections
For power team tryouts, there are up to 3 teams that are being filled: black, green, and white. When our staff has made all offers for the black team, and has finished assembling their waitlist, an announcement will be made saying that the black team has been selected. Once this announcement is made, players that are not interested in being chosen for the green and/or white teams may leave. Again, an announcement will be made when the green team is selected, and the white team will begin the selection process.
Conflict of Interest
It is very important to us that we maintain the highest level of integrity in the selection process. We want the players that deserve to make a team to make it. Therefore, we are very conscientious about "politics" and conflict of interest. Players that pose a conflict of interest for coaches include:
- Players that have paid for private lessons
- Players that are on a coach's school team
- Family members and friends
Coaches may not select these players for a team, but these players may be placed on the team by other staff members. All players chosen for any team will be signed off by the club director.
Returning Players
City Beach Volleyball Club believes in building upon the instruction a player has received in their previous season with the club. We teach the Gold Medal Squared system, and it is our goal to retain players familiar with these techniques. Returning players must compete for power league positions, but are guaranteed to at least be offered a position when available on an Area League team if they are in good standing with the club. All players, including returning players, must try out. Offers are made at tryouts.
